How to Make Scaled-Down Models of Trees

Realistic-looking model landscapes are made to the scale of model vehicles, a train set or buildings. Each item must be measured and matched to the scale of the main object in a diorama, architectural display or model railroad setting. Trees are part of a natural landscape. Scaled-down trees will give a realistic effect to a model landscape project. Create a tree to scale by using natural materials and model railroad scene supplies. Use a matching scale for the tree. HO, which has an 1:87 scale is one of the more common model measurement scales.

Instructions

    • 1

Calculate the scale of the tree for your project. This is done by checking the scale size of the model, train or building and calculating the height of the tree. Use an online model scale calculator or math to find the size needed for your project. For example, if you are using the 1:87 HO scale, 1 inch of a model tree is equal to 87 inches of a real tree.

    • 2

Measure the dried tree twig, cone or grape stem for the display. Cut the wood to size with a craft knife or miniature saw. Remove excess petals from a small cone with the saw or knife when using it to make a tree form.

    • 3

Coat the portions of the item with high tack glue where the greenery of the tree will be placed. Follow the directions on the product container for proper application. High tack glue should sit for 15 minutes to allow the tack to set up for maximum adherence.

    • 4

Hold the tree twig or grape stem and dip it into a bag of green scene foliage. Move the bag to drop the fluffy green material onto the tacky glue. Coat the miniature tree with the material.

    • 5

Tap the tree to remove excess or loose foliage back into the bag. Use tweezers to apply foliage to any areas where the tacky glue is exposed. Set the tree into the ground.
