Things You'll Need
Instructions
Collect a few cups of clean, dry dirt from outside. Pour the dirt into a bowl through a strainer to clean out small debris and pebbles. Clean and dry the strainer and set aside with the dirt to use later.
Use a paint brush to spread a generous amount of contact cement on the area you need to be grassy. Quickly place the felt on the cement and press it down firmly. Smooth it down with your hands from the center to the edges to get rid of bubbles and wrinkles.
Pour the dirt through the strainer again to shake the dirt over the surface of the felt, covering about three quarters of the area. Use your fingers to lightly spread and smooth it out the way you like, but be careful that it is natural and uneven in appearance.
Use the metal brush to scrape and fluff up the fibers of the felt to create grass. Leave some areas uncombed to give it a more realistic look of wild grass in a field. Use scissors to cut the fibers to your desired length.
Mix one part artists' matte medium with five parts water. Add one drop of liquid dish detergent and pour into a spray bottle. Spray mixture over the dirt and felt grass thoroughly until it has a white cast. Spraying will cause the colors to appear darker but will lighten back to the original color by allowing one week to completely dry.
