Tips for a Garden Railway

A G-scale model railroad in the garden is a good combination project for those who enjoy model railroading and gardening. The outside elements will have an affect on this type of model and you will need to be able to access all areas of the track. This project may also take up a large portion of your yard so you will need to work around other aspects of your yard.
  1. Planning

    • A garden railway requires careful planning. Design your layout first to determine which areas of your yard in which you would like your train to travel. Draw a layout plan showing where you would like your track to go. Keep the track layout simple. Lay the track first or use stakes and string to show where the track will go before you landscape. Avoid steep inclines and make loops wide. The grade of any incline should not exceed three percent.

    Just Build

    • Some modelers spend so much time planning their railroad that they find that they never have the time to actually build it. Once you have your basic track layout planned, just go for it. Lay out the ballast and set up the track so you can begin running your train. Do not worry about having the landscaping done and buildings built. Things do not have to be absolutely perfect; just run your railroad and make additions when you have the time and money. Eventually, your railway will be complete, but you can still enjoy it in the meantime.

    Track Maintenance

    • Especially in areas with extreme weather changes, the outside elements can take a toll on a garden railroad. It is important to check over the track on a regular basis to identify any issues and correct them before the issue becomes a big problem. Ensure that ballast is sufficient under all parts of the track. Clean the track on a regular basis using smoke fluid, alcohol or adhesive remover to to take away all dirt and residue. Smoke fluid is sold at hobby stores. Hobbyists typically use it in model steam engines to create a smoking effectIt also works well for for cleaning track. Use stainless steel track to prevent rusting.

    Garden Maintenance

    • In addition to the track, check plants along the way. Trim back all plants so they do not hang over the track. Weed and water the garden part of your railroad regularly to ensure that it remains beautiful and growing. Be careful when watering to keep from washing away ballast, or washing dirt onto the tracks. Check for debris that may have fallen onto the track, especially after storms or high winds.
