Kato Decoder Installation

The Kato company makes many different types of materials that you can use to create your own model railroad system. A Kato decoder is a device that you can install in your model trains in order to run the electrical components in the model, such as headlights or taillights. In order to use a decoder, you must first install it in the train and position it correctly in order for it to work properly.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect from the rest of the train the train piece in which you want to install the decoder. When it is removed, flip the train over and remove the floor board cover from its underside. To do this, press the cover down and push it in the direction of the arrow to slide it off.

    • 2

Remove the switch inside of the compartment if one exists by disconnecting the wire and pulling the unit out of the train. If there is no switch installed, ignore this step.

    • 3

Insert the decoder through the floor board and push it inside. The decoder should be installed according to the "A" and "B" labels on each end. Place "A" toward the front if you want the decoder to power headlights or "B" toward the front if you want it to power taillights. The decoder should now be completely inside the train's compartment with the correct end touching the front of the train.

    • 4

Replace the floor board cover by sliding it back into place with the arrow facing the appropriate direction.

    • 5

Test the train and the decoder to ensure you installed the device properly. The decoder should power the headlights or taillights of the part of the train in which it was installed. If you do not see power to these lights, make sure the decoder is facing the appropriate direction according to Step 3.
