How to Insulate Dummy Trucks

Insulating the trucks on a dummy locomotive on your model train layout allows you to run the locomotive without worrying about shorting out your layout's wiring. With the proper tools and a little know-how, the dummy locomotive's trucks can quickly and easily be insulated. Then you will be able to run the dummy locomotive on your own or any other model train layout without worry.

Instructions

    • 1

Use the largest of the screwdrivers in the precision screwdriver set to pop the body off of the HO scale dummy locomotive. Do this by placing the screwdriver on the tabs between the locomotive's body and chassis and gently pry the tabs free from the holding points on the chassis. This opens up the locomotive so that you can begin the tear down to the truck's or locomotive's wheel sets so that you can insulate them.

    • 2

Use the 1/16 inch precision screwdriver from the set to remove the screws from the trucks that are holding them into the chassis of the locomotive. Once the trucks are free from the chassis, set them to the side. Set the chassis to the side of the trucks.

    • 3

Take each truck into your hand individually. Then use the 1/16 inch precision screwdriver as a lever to pull a ¼ inch diameter thin rubber washer around each of the wheels on the locomotive's trucks. With each wheel of the trucks now wrapped with a rubber washer the wheels of the trucks are now insulated.

    • 4

Place the locomotive's trucks back into the chassis of the locomotive. Then use the 1/16 inch precision screwdriver to screw the trucks' holding screws back into place. This attaches the trucks back onto the locomotive's chassis.

    • 5

Replace the dummy locomotive's body over the chassis. Use the largest of the precision screwdrivers as needed to pry the tabs back into place on the holding points on the locomotive's chassis. At this point, the dummy locomotive's trucks are insulated and the locomotive has been reassembled.
