How to Install an Atlas RS3 Decoder

The Atlas RS3 decoder is a decoder for Digital Command Control (DCC) model railroads. Model train decoders work by interpreting control information sent through the power system of the train track. As a result of this, they receive instructions to speed up, slow down, stop, make turns and blow their horns alongside the power current. The Atlas RS3 is an adjustable decoder that is compatible with most model trains and sits on top of them processing signals.

  Loosen the bottom wing nut attached to the Atlas RS3 decoder and extend the small vise clamp at the bottom so it will fit over your model train.

  Press the vise gently along the train and tighten the clamp by turning it clockwise.

  Remove the small plug from the train that connects to the railroad's power supply. Connect the Atlas RS3 decoder's plug into this.

  Connect the train's power into the decoder's connection slot, which is a second slot that is part of its power cable. The train will now receive power from the decoder, which, in turn, is now receiving power directly from the DCC.
