How to Add Sound to an LGB Train

You can create layouts both indoors and outdoors with garden-scale trains. Most Lehmann Gross Bahn (LGB) garden-scale trains simply run around the track without any sound. You can add sound to any unit to create a more realistic railroad experience with any type of LGB train, from a diesel freight train to a passenger train pulled by a steam engine. Install a sound box to make your layout sound real.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the shell from the LGB engine. Some engines have clips you must press with a screwdriver to remove the shell, while other types of train cars have shells held on with screws. Loosen the screws, set them aside and remove the cover, exposing the engine's electrical interior.

    • 2

Cut the wire included with the sound box to size with a hobby knife. To avoid excess wire in the engine, cut the wire just long enough to reach from the box to the engine.

    • 3

Expose the wires by cutting the plastic coating away with your hobby knife. Connect these ends to the two terminals on the far right of the sound box.

    • 4

Install the sound box into the engine: Attach it securely using double-sided tape. Avoid placing the box near other connectors or electrical wires, which may cause the entire engine to short-circuit.

    • 5

Connect the other end of the wire to the multipurpose socket inside the engine. This connection provides power to the sound box and allows you to use the sounds in the box.

    • 6

Adjust the volume. If running the train indoors, keep the volume low. An outdoor layout requires a louder volume.

    • 7

Replace the shell: Tighten the screws into place or snaps the clips into place.
