How to Control a Toy Train

Learning to control a model train takes a little practice and trial and error. Certain scales of train such as the smallest the N scale require an advanced touch since they are lighter and the rail gauge is only 1/2 inch wide. HO scale trains are a little easier for the novice to learn how to control since they are heavier, where the larger O scale trains are the easiest. These are the tradition large Lionel trains that are often seen around Christmas trees.

Place the direction switch into forward. Slowly make the train move forward. Your problem will be track switches and turns. These are areas you will need to pay particular attention to.

    • 2

Advance the speed incrementally, learning where the lever is at each increase of speed. The best method is to move the controller about 1/2 inch each time. Speed might look fun, but running the train off the tracks can cause damage to the train.

    • 3

Attempt taking turns at slower speeds first until you find one that is comfortable. Remember, large, sweeping turns will allow you to hold more speed than sharp, angled turns. This is because of the speed and the general lack of movement of the wheels on their pivots.

Practice stopping the engine on straightaway so you can get a feel of how much roll the train will have when the power is shut down to that particular train. This is key, to learn how to start and stop the train. Moving into forward needs to be done with an easy hand, not a quick motion, since this will cause it to leap the track.

Practice backing up. Put the switch into reverse and slowly back up. This is a difficult trick at first but can increase the reality and fun of model training. Backing up needs to always be done at very slow speed. Again this is a feel technique and can only be learned through trial and error with that particular train. No train is similar.
