Lionel Mobile Train Displays

Joshua Lionel Cowen founded Lionel in 1900 during a time when the rail system represented American ingenuity. Over the years, model railroading became a common pastime of both the young and old. Today, Lionel offers a number of options for those who wish to create their own mobile train display. You do not have to be technically skilled to assemble a Lionel train set. Just a few basic steps are all it takes to put together a train display the whole family can enjoy.
  1. Location

    • Most of Lionel's trains run on their FasTrack system, which is designed to fit together simply and allow your train to run over multiple surfaces, including carpet. With FasTrack, the location choice for your display is not limited to hard-floored areas. However, the size of the space available for your Lionel train display greatly influences the type of train set you choose. Lionel makes sets that work well with only a few feet of space, so you do not need a large area to enjoy a train.

    Gauge Options

    • Lionel's tracks come in several different widths or gauges. Gauge is the distance between the two outside rails of the track. Lionel's "O" and "O-27" are the most common gauges and are both 1 1/4 inches wide. However, "O" tracks are just slightly taller and handle slightly larger trains. The tighter curves of "O-27" gauge make it a better choice for small spaces. Other less common gauges are the "'S" gauge and the "G" gauge. "S" gauge is slightly smaller than the "O" and "O-27" and "G" is slightly larger.

    Choosing a Train Set

    • Lionel makes several starter sets for beginners that are easy to assemble. These kits come with everything you need to get started including tracks and a power source. Buy additional cars and tracks to expand your set over time. Starter kits include traditional trains like the Lionel Line Classical Freight set that has a working headlight and real smoke. Some of their starter kits feature trains from pop-culture like the "Harry Potter Hogwart's Express" and "The Polar Express."

    Accessorizing

    • Lionel has a number of accessories to add to customize your train display. Some of the starter sets come with a few accessories such as telephone poles or billboards to get you started. Lionel sells items like trees, vending machines, figurines and seasonal decorations for your display. Go to Lionel's website to find tips for creating your own accessories from every day items. For instance, learn to create a plowed field from corrugated cardboard.
