Diesel
Diesel locomotives run on small amounts of diesel fuel. Similar to real-life diesel engines, these locomotives need to be periodically refilled and require more maintenance than steam or electric models. As of late 2010, Lionel had more than 300 diesel locomotives, including the Amtrak Dash-9ȅ, the BNSF Dash-9Ƙ1, the Canadian National Dash-9Ĉ3, and the Chicago &North Western UP Heritage SD70Ace¹9. All of these diesel locomotives feature sound effects, smoke units, and electric lights.
Electric
Electric locomotives run on a battery or nearby power supply. Lionel makes several electric locomotives, including the Amtrak HHP-8 #F664, the GG-1 Electric Locomotive Pennsylvania, the GG-1 Tuscan with 5 Stripesê0 and the GG-1 Electric Locomotive Penn CentralǪ1. Each electric engines has functioning lights and sound effects.
Steam
Steam locomotives use heated water to create steam and thus pressure to power the wheels. Steam trains provide more realism than electric trains but do not require the same upkeep as diesel models. Lionel's steam lineup as of 2010 includes the Baltimore &Ohio Atlantic0, the Milwaukee Road S-3 Northernċ, and the Union Pacific Challengerų0. These locomotives also feature working lights, sound effects, and smoke units.
