Type
N scale is the smallest common railway model scale.Though there are three that are smaller--Z, HZ and WZ scales--they are rare. N scale specifications in the United States are different than in Britain.
Scale
N scale tracks have a gauge of 9 mm, or .35433 inches. Track gauge is the distance between the two rails. This gauge represents a scale of one to 160. In the UK, models are produced and sold with a scale of 1:148, while the models in the U.S., like the track, have a scale of 1:160.
Benefits
While N scale layouts are not the grandest, they are perfect for modelers who have a limited amount of space. This scale has become popular with modelers who live in small houses or apartments.
