How to Make a Lionel Train Smoke More

Lionel brand model trains have been spouting smoke from their stacks since the latter 1940s. A large puff of visible white smoke is somewhat expected from toy train sets in operation. Lionel trains are made with smoke generators that create a fog using a special type of oil. There is a limit to the amount of smoke that can come from a Lionel train, but steps can be taken to increase the voltage, which, in turn, produces a greater volume of smoke.

Things You'll Need

  • Lionel smoke fluid

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the smoke switch to the "On" position. Lionel trains position the smoke switch on the front deck of the engine car.

    • 2

Add four to six drops of Lionel brand smoke fluid into the smoke stack whenever smoke production slows down. Lionel smoke fluid is made to work specifically with the smoke units in Lionel trains. Other brands of toy train smoke fluid and household oils have a different viscosity which will not evaporate as intended for Lionel train smoke production.

    • 3

Lay out the track to include long straight sections. Long runs allows model trains to work at higher voltage which creates more smoke.

    • 4

Load the cargo cars with coal or wood to increase the operating voltage by forcing the engine to pull more weight.
