How to Build an Electric Train Set Table

Train sets that are set up and used as a hobby for young kids and adults alike can benefit from a dedicated table to lay the track. A card table or other type of folding table can be used in a pinch, but a more permanent structure can be built out of wood. You can build an electric train set table by first determining how big the table needs to be.

Things You'll Need

  • 4-foot by 8-foot plywood sheet
  • Tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Circular saw
  • 1- by 2-inch boards
  • Nails

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the 4- by 8-foot plywood sheet to a length of 6 feet. Make a mark on the plywood with the pencil. Cut the plywood on the pencil mark with the circular saw.

    • 2

Measure and mark the 1- by 2-inch boards to the dimensions of the cut piece of plywood. Two pieces will need to be 72 inches and two pieces will need to be 46 inches. Cut the 1- by 2-inch boards to the required lengths with the circular saw.

    • 3

Place the 72-inch pieces on each edge of the long sides of the plywood. Secure the 1- by 2-inch boards to the plywood with nails using the nail gun. Place the 46-inch pieces of 1- by 2-inch boards on each end and secure them with nails. This will create a frame around the perimeter of the plywood.

    • 4

Measure and cut the 2- by 4-inch boards to a length of 31 inches with the circular saw.

    • 5

Place one of the 31-inch 2- by 4-inch boards in one corner of the frame on the plywood. Place the 2- by 4-inch board so the short edge is facing the short end of the plywood. Drill two holes with the power drill and secure the 2- by 4-inch board to the frame with screws. Repeat this step for the remaining corners of the frame.

    • 6

Lift the complete train set table up off the floor and set it on its legs. Paint the top of the plywood with green paint or add green “grass” paper.
