How to Lay out HO Train Track

HO scale is just one of the many possible sizes for model railways, but the hardest and most important part of the set up is getting the track set up correctly. For best results, you want to assemble the track in a loop set-up, so you can keep your trains moving in a single direction. However, you can set up your track in nearly any way you can imagine, provided you have the right pieces.

Things You'll Need

  • Pencil and paper
  • Ruler
  • Wood or cork board
  • HO scale tracks
  • HO scale switches, cross pieces, bridges
  • HO scale scenery, buildings, trees, etc.
  • Train set power supply and control board
  • HO scale trains
  • Small tacks and glue

Instructions

    • 1

Sketch the space on which you will be laying the track out, making it as accurate as possible. Use the ruler to measure the walls and and other features of the space. You can lay the track out on carpet, although this is more difficult to keep flat. Many train enthusiasts will use a wooden board or cork board on which to lay the track out; these options also allow you to add scenery to your layout.

    • 2

Start drawing your track design, using the pieces you have on hand as inspiration. Pieces generally come in straight sections, curved sections that represent 1/8th of a turn, as well as switches, crosses and bridges. There are a number of different designs, ranging from simple loops to more complicated figure eights with sidings. Model railroading websites can offer inspiration (see Resources). New users should start with a basic oval: two semi-circles about 6- to 12-inches apart, connected by straightaways. This will give you an idea of how the pieces fit together, and you can change it later.

    • 3

Add scenery if you have some to the layout.

    • 4

Place the tracks loosely in the space according to your diagram. Don't connect them yet; make sure you have enough track to complete your design, and that it will look similar to the design you're aiming to create. Make revisions to the plan as necessary or change the design if you need to.

    • 5

Attach the tracks in their final configuration. You can change the layout later, if you want. The track should slot together along the rails, and a connector on the cross ties should slot together. However, some manufacturers use slightly different mechanisms. If you are confused, consult the directions that come with your track set.

Connect the power supply and controls to the track according to the manufacturer's instructions. Test the layout by putting your train on the track and test driving it across your new layout.
