How to Hook Up HO Scale Turntables

A locomotive turntable provides a visually interesting element on any train layout. You can use turntables either to move locomotives into a roundhouse for storage and maintenance or as a means of turning the locomotive around. Wiring a turntable is now easier than ever, thanks to simplified modern products.

Things You'll Need

  • Soldering iron or gun
  • Solder
  • Flexible electrical wire
  • Small screwdriver

Instructions

    • 1

Install the turntable itself onto your layout where you want it to go. You will need to complete the physical installation of the turntable onto the layout base according to the directions provided with the turntable.

    • 2

Attach the turntable motor to the turntable. Some turntables already have the motor mounted on them, but many do not. Make sure the mechanical gears of the motor fit smoothly into the turntable.

    • 3

Fasten two wires to the connection on the turntable motor. Drill a hole through the base and run the wires under the layout to the power pack. Make sure the wires are securely connected to the turntable by putting a drop of solder over each screw.

    • 4

Fasten the wires to the activator button of the turntable in the same manner as you did to the turntable. Use a drop of solder with each of these connections as well. Repeat this process with the wires running from the activator button to the power pack.

    • 5

Turn on the power pack and press the button to activate the turntable. Make sure the table moves from one position to the next smoothly and stops precisely where it should at each position. The table should be able to move in both directions with no problem. You also may want to consider using a different power pack for the turntable than what you use for locomotives, as the power drain from using the turntable will cause the locomotives to slow momentarily when they are running.
