How to Build an HO Scale Track Side Loading Dock

No model railroad is complete without some sort of loading dock onto which freight and cargo can be placed. This useful detail can be constructed relatively easily, although it will require some skill and manual dexterity. Just be sure to use the right tools and take your time.

Things You'll Need

  • Several strips of balsa wood, 1/8 inch-by-1/16 inch
  • Two strips of balsa wood, 1/8 inch-by-1/8 inch
  • Super Glue or cyanoacrylate adhesive
  • Wood-colored spray paint
  • Testor's Dull-Cote or other dead flat finish
  • Bits of lichen
  • Scale gravel

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a frame from the balsa wood that meets the dimensions of your dock. Cut long strips that are the length of the dock and cross braces that are the width of the dock. Only you can know how long and wide your dock needs to be, but it should extend from the back of the factory or warehouse to which it is attached right to the edge of the track.

    • 2

Cement the frame together using the eight-inch square strips and adhesive Make two rectangles for the edges around the top and bottom of the platform. Cut four short strips for the legs and glue the two rectangles together with them.

    • 3

Cut the thinner strips to cover the top of the dock widthwise. Glue them side-by-side across the top. Cut longer strips and glue them lengthwise down the long sides. Glue more strips widthwise across the ends.

    • 4

Spray paint your dock with the wood color paint of your choice. Let the paint dry and then coat with Testor's Dull-Cote spray to seal the paint, or use another type of dead flat finish.

    • 5

Position your dock next to the tracks between the factory or other structure that it serves. Cut and glue the remaining eighth-inch dowels in a stack to make steps leading from one end of the dock to the ground. Paint and seal it as well. Detail your dock with boxes or other scale equipment. Glue bits of lichen or gravel around the base for added realism.
