How to Remove Rust From an O Scale Train Track

Model railroad tracks are typically made of metal and can rust over time. The rust is not only unsightly, but can cause malfunctions in the operation of the trains and even dangerous electrical shortages. This is especially true of O scale track which is larger than most scales. Rust should be removed from tracks immediately.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

  1. Light, Patchy Rust

    • 1

Place a small amount of rust remover (10 or more drops) on the rusty areas of the track. Allow it to set for about three minutes.

    • 2

Use the small wire brush to gently, but thoroughly brush the surface where the rust has accumulated. Brush until you see the metal underneath. Scrape away any rust that has built up in the crevices of the rails and slats.

    • 3

Wipe away the rust debris from the track with the clean towel. If necessary, dampen an area of the rag and wipe the metal thoroughly. Be sure to dry the track well to avoid further rusting.

    Advanced Rust

    • 4

Place the rusted pieces of track into a flat, plastic bin. Cover them completely with the rust remover.

    • 5

Allow the pieces of track to settle in the solution for the manufacturer's recommended amount of time.

    • 6

Remove the track pieces and vigorously brush them, one by one.

    • 7

Wipe each piece clean with the towel to remove all rust debris.
