What Is Lionel Track Cleaner?

Lionel trains have been a favorite of kids and adults alike since 1900. Routine maintenance on the tracks will help keep these trains in proper mechanical condition and allow them to hold their value. One way you can keep your trains running smoothly is to keep the tracks free of dust, dirt and grime. The Lionel Track Cleaner is the perfect tool to keep your tracks looking and working as if they were brand new.
  1. Function

    • The Lionel Track Cleaner is a train car with a fluid tank and two rotating discs. The first disc has the track cleaning fluid and cleans the track, while the second removes dirt and dries the track. The track cleaner only performs basic maintenance. For the cleaner to work properly, you must first clean any sections that have excessive dirt or grime by hand.

    Performance

    • Position the switch on the side of the car to the "on" position for three seconds to apply fluid to the first disc. Return the switch to the "off" position before operating the train. The track cleaning car works best if coupled behind the locomotive, and can be left attached at all times. This way you can run the cleaning car whenever you see that the tracks need some attention without having to disassemble the train to add it.

    Extra Cleaning

    • Before using the track cleaning car, you may need clean some spots of the tracks by hand. If you have trouble removing all of the dirt from the track, use a slightly abrasive kitchen sponge to loosen the dirt and wipe it off with a soft cloth. Rust can cause the train to hesitate while traveling down the track. To remove rust, use sandpaper or an abrasive scouring pad followed by a damp cloth.

    Warnings

    • Do not use steel wool to clean dirt from the tracks. Small pieces can remain on the tracks and get picked up by the train cars, which can cause damage to them. Never add flammable fluids to the track cleaner's reservoir tank. Some fluids can react with plastic and cause damage to the car. When filling the reservoir tank with fluid, do not fill above half way. Hold the train car over a sink while attaching the fluid tank back to the train car.

    Maintenance

    • After extended use the discs on the Lionel Track Cleaner may need to be replaced to continue cleaning to the best of their ability. Extra discs and cleaning fluid are available from any authorized Lionel dealer. If you find your cleaning discs are not rotating you need to replace the traction tires. Remove the worn tire by slipping it off, and replace it with a new one.
