How to Build an HO Gauge Table

Building the right type of train table for your HO scale layout is essential for any successful model railroad. You can make many types of tables, but all of them require the same basic techniques.

Things You'll Need

  • 1/4-inch plywood
  • Saber saw
  • 2-by-4s
  • 1-by-4s
  • Screws and nails
  • Rubber caps
  • Cloth bunting

Instructions

    • 1

Plan your HO layout and determine the amount and shape of benchwork needed. Purchase as many sheets of plywood as you will need; the sheets must be good on at least one side. If you are going to have to walk on your benchwork, buy sheets that are thick enough to support your weight.

    • 2

Cut the 2-by-4 table legs to the height that you need. If you are just making a simple table layout, then 3 feet may be the right height. Attach the rubber stops to the bottom of the table legs so that they do not skid or splinter. But make sure that they are all of the same length.

    • 3

Build the frame of the table using the 1-by-4s and screw the table legs onto the frame. If the frame is not shaped like a square, cut the bracing to fit the shape you need. Include cross-braces for support. Nail them to the side braces.

    • 4

Cut the plywood to fit your frame. If your layout design incorporates overlapping grades and multi-level track, then you may need to use a saber saw to cut strips out of the plywood and shim the wood up underneath.

    • 5

Nail the plywood to the frame. Use screws if nails won't be strong enough to fasten the wood down to the frame. Position the table in your room, basement or attic the way you want it and fasten cloth bunting to the underside of the bracing to conceal the legs. Consider attaching plywood shelves underneath the table for storage.
