Model Train Clubs in New York

Model railroads are popular with people of all ages and allow collectors to combine knowledge of electrical wiring with creativity to create realistic displays. For collectors, model railroad clubs provide an opportunity to socialize with others who share an interest in the hobby. New York is home to numerous model railroad clubs with organizations found throughout the state.
  1. Model Railroad Club of Buffalo

    • Located at the Boys and Girls Club in Buffalo, the Model Railroad Club of Buffalo operates an O-scale 20-by-25-foot railroad for visitors and members to enjoy. The club holds monthly meetings for members and hosts workshops at different times of the year to the public concerning topics of special interest to model railroaders. The club also participates in model train shows throughout the region.

    Central New York Model Railroad Club

    • Founded during the 1970s, Central New York Model Railroad Club is located in Elbridge, approximately 18 miles west of Syracuse. The club operates the Delaware and Ontario Railroad, an HO-scale based on the real geographic area between Wolcott Bay and Kingston, N.Y.. The club holds open-to-the-public operating sessions in the evening on the first Friday of every month. The club also holds regular work and business meetings for members only.

    Nassau Lionel Operating Engineers

    • Nassau Lionel Operating Engineers is located in the Long Island town of Levittown and was founded in 1983. Members of the club collect O-gauge, Lionel trains. The club participates in regional shows and works throughout the year to prepare a display for its annual open house. Held every December, this event is free to the community and usually runs for two weeks.

    Queens County Model Railroad Association

    • Established in 1947, Queens County Model Railroad Association operates a 60-by-30-foot HO scale model railroad. The association's railroad display depicts the Empire Railroad, which runs from Hagerstown, Md. to New York Harbor and travels through Pennsylvania and New Jersey along the way. The club is always looking for new members, even individuals who are new to the hobby. Meetings are held every Friday evening, and the club operates its trains during these meetings twice per month.
