How to Remove Decals From Model Trains

Collecting, buying and restoring model trains is a hobby for many people. Model trains are easily purchased from hobby shops, toy stores and online sources. Restoring model trains takes hours of work to clean and get the train's surface ready for paint or another type of finish. Removing decals from a model train requires an adhesive remover to clean off any glue residue. Use a non-abrasive cloth or towel.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a small bowl with one cup of warm water.

    • 2

Dip a non-abrasive cloth or towel in the bowl of warm water. Wring out excess water.

    • 3

Wipe the decal on the train surface with the damp cloth or towel.

    • 4

Pull the decal slowly from the train surface with a pair of tweezers.

    • 5

Apply one teaspoon of a adhesive remover to a cotton ball. Wear latex gloves to keep the chemical off of your hands. If the decal to be removed is large, apply adhesive remover to more than one cotton ball.

    • 6

Rub the soaked cotton ball(s) on any residue left after removing the decal from the train.

    • 7

Let the adhesive remover sit on the residue for five minutes.

    • 8

Rub the area where the decal was with a damp non-abrasive cloth or towel until the glue residue is gone.

    • 9

Dip the cloth or towel in the bowl of warm water again. Rinse the area with the damp cloth or towel.

    • 10

Dry the clean, decal-free area with a dry cloth or towel.

    • 11

Repeat steps 2 through 10 for any other decals you want to remove from the model train.
