How to Use Kato Unitrack

For many model railroad enthusiasts, laying track is just a necessary evil that must be overcome before they can run their trains. Fortunately, many manufacturers now make a type of ready-made track that has the ballast already built in. Kato is one such company.

Things You'll Need

  • Kato Unitrack
  • Drill
  • Nails
  • Track Feeders
  • Rail Joiners

Instructions

  1. Add Holes

    • 1

Drill new holes in the ties of the track. The factory-provided holes are too conspicuous and allow the nails to stick out if you use them. So instead, add holes right next to the pre-drilled ones in each piece of track. Secure the track with nails through the new tie holes, allowing the nail heads to rest flush against the ties without pressing into them.

    • 2

Rock the pieces of track from side to side whenever you disconnect them. Do NOT rub them up and down; it will damage or break the unijoiners in them. (This is vitally important.)

    • 3

Weather your track with a mixture of water and India ink. Dilute the ink with water to make a thin wash that you can brush onto the track. This will serve to disguise the difference in coloring between different pieces of track that sometimes exist.

    • 4

Use pre-soldered feeder-joiners for track feeders. Simply replace the normal unijoiners with these feeders. However, you will have to nail the track down directly on either side of the feeders, since they do not replace the unijoiners to ensure a solid electrical connection.

    • 5

Take off the unijoiners and replace them with regular rail joiners (made by Atlas) in order to interface the unitrack with other brands of track. You will have to shim most other brands of track up about an eighth of an inch in order for them to be level with the unitrack.
