How to Collect Model Trains

Model trains and model railroads can be a tremendously entertaining hobby. Model trains have something for everyone, regardless of age. However, there are a few things you should consider before you start to collect model trains.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine whether you will collect model trains to display, to operate or both. If you intend to operate your model trains you may wish to collect a different type than if you intend only to display your model trains.

    • 2

Consider collecting older, prewar model trains if you intend only to display. These trains are perhaps the most authentic and the most interesting of all model trains. However, prewar trains are also the most fragile, and run the highest risk of damage when you operate them.

    • 3

Select the middle stage of model trains, "postwar," if you would like to operate your model trains but would still like to treat your collection as an investment. These are trains manufactured between 1945 and 1970.

    • 4

Collect modern model trains if you intend to operate your model trains. Modern model trains come in many shapes and sizes, from fuel-powered to electrical, and from metal to plastic. Choose the type of model train that most appeals to you.

    • 5

Join a model train club or association such as the National Model Railroad Association (see Resources below). These groups help you to further explore your hobby and provide great opportunities for lasting friendships.
