Instructions

    • 1

Measure the space in which you wish to build your train table. Take into account the location of windows, electrical outlets, heating vents and door sizes at this point.

    • 2

Consider what type of top you want on your table. If you're working around a doorway or other obstacles, you can make the top in sections for ease of movement. You can also leave the center open to provide access to every part of your train lay out.

    • 3

Decide what type of legs you want to support your train table. You can purchase stock table legs from any home improvement center or, create your own. A rule of thumb is to use legs that are about 28 inches tall, but they can be longer or shorter if you desire. If your table is large, consider braces.

    • 4

Choose your apron. The apron provides polished look and gives you a place to attach your legs, braces and some of a train's mechanical elements as well. You can use 1x6's to construct this part of your train table.

    • 5

Write a detailed list of your measurements. This will provide you with the supplies you'll need to purchase to build your train table.

    • 6

Use screws to provide a strong base to support your model trains. You can finish the table by painting or staining, or leave it unfinished so that the model train is the focus.
