How to Use a Camera Reflector

Camera reflectors are typically large circular screens made of reflective fabric. In photography, reflectors help control light, improving image quality by brightening features, filling in shadows and highlighting areas. Camera reflectors come in a wide range of styles and may be used in a number of ways, but their basic function remains consistent.

Instructions

    • 1

Position the camera reflector under the subject's chin to reduce shadows from strong lighting. Place the reflector at the subject's chest level and at an equal angle between the subject's face and the light source. The reflector bounces light upwards to lessen shadows under the eyes, nose and jawline.

    • 2

Hold the reflector to the side of the subject's face to create highlights and enhanced contrast. The reflected light brightens the side of the face nearest the reflector and creates greater contours on the opposite side.

    • 3

Use the silver or white sides of a reflector to add highlights to your subject's eyes. Position the reflector in front of the subject and adjust its angle to redirect light into the pupils.

    • 4

Adjust the reflector's angle and positioning to control the redirected light's intensity. Using the reflected light's hot center or its diffused edges bring more subtlety and variation to your lighting effects.
