Changing the Owner Name on a Kindle Fire

The Kindle Fire, like other e-book readers and tablet computers, enables you to personalize the device with an owner name as well as enter your billing information for purchasing e-books, digital magazines and other content. Your Kindle Fire is automatically named during its initial activation, but the name is not permanent -- you can change it as many times as you want.
  1. Changing Your Kindle's Name

    • You manage your Kindle Fire's owner name via your Amazon Kindle Management account. Use a computer to navigate to the Amazon Kindle Management Web page (link in Resources), click "Sign In," and then enter your Amazon username, the email address you originally used to create your Amazon account, and your Amazon password. Click the "Sign in using our secure server" button to log in to your Kindle Fire account, where you see your Kindle Fire's current owner name as well as an image of a Kindle Fire. Click the "Edit" link next to your Kindle Fire's name. On the Edit Kindle Information dialog box that opens, enter the owner name you want in the box next to "Kindle Name:", and then click the "Update" button. On your Kindle Fire, tap "Settings," and then tap "Sync" to update your Kindle Fire's owner name within the device. When the sync completes, your new owner name appears on both the e-book reader, in the upper left-hand corner, and within your Amazon Kindle account.

    Troubleshooting

    • If your new owner name doesn't appear after syncing, restart your Kindle Fire and look for your new owner name in the upper left-hand corner of the device. If you see the old owner name, perform another sync, and then restart your Kindle. The new name should be at the top of the device.

    Naming

    • Your owner name can be anything from a generic name to a descriptive one. The name can consist of letters, numbers and characters, as well as a combination of all three. You can be as descriptive as you want or name the device simply using your first or last name.

    Considerations

    • There are a variety of reasons for changing your Kindle Fire's owner name, including receiving the e-book reader from an individual that had already used the device, you never renamed the device after initially setting up the e-book reader, the owner name is not to your liking anymore or you want to use a name that is more personal to you. You may also want to change your Kindle Fire's owner name if you plan on giving the e-book reader to a friend, child or other individual as a gift or for use in a school, business or personal environment.
