Back Up Data
Because the hard reset utility erases any digital content on your e-book reader including personal information, e-books, accounts and passwords, it is important to back up any digital publications on the device. To back up your Sony Reader, connect the device to your computer using its USB cable. Your computer will automatically detect the e-book reader and launch its syncing application. Follow the onscreen prompts to complete the backup process.
Hard Reset Launch
To launch the hard reset utility, press and hold the power button down on your Sony Reader until the message "Device Shutdown" appears. Press "Yes" to power off the e-book reader and then press the power button again to power on Sony Reader. Press and hold down the "Page Turn (Next)" and "Back" buttons when the message "Opening book...." appears on your e-book reader's screen. The device's Home screen will begin to load. Release the "Back" button once the Sony Reader's Home screen has fully loaded. Press the "Back" button again and then release it. Release the "Page Turn (Next)" button. This button sequence starts the hard reset utility.
Completing the Hard Reset
The message "Would you like to execute Factory Initialize" will appear on the e-book reader's screen after the hard reset utility is running. If you change your mind at this point, you can exit the utility by pressing "No" at this prompt or press "Yes" to start the hard reset process. The process begins and the hard reset utility powers off your Sony Reader once the process is complete.

Once the e-book reader is powered off, press the power button to turn on the device. Follow the onscreen prompts to enter your personal information into the device. After entering your information, connect your Sony Reader to your computer and follow the onscreen prompts to restore digital publications to the device.
