I Authorized My eReader but It Says It Is Authorized to Someone Else

The error message stating that your e-book reader is already authorized to someone else means the device̵7;s previous owner̵7;s information is still present within the device, including e-book-purchasing data. Authorizing an e-book reader allows you to download and view digital content from an e-book-selling service or store, such as Barnes & Noble or Adobe. You must deauthorize your e-book reader before entering your personal information into and using the device.
  1. Gift or Used E-book Reader

    • The message that an e-book reader is already authorized to someone else is usually found on used e-book readers or those given as gifts from users who authorized them with Adobe Digital Editions ̵1; an application that lets you view and manage e-books and other digital publications. The error does not prevent you from downloading e-books and other digital content, but the content will be associated with the previous owner̵7;s account instead of yours.

    Authorizations

    • Adobe Digital Editions lets you transfer content from and to a variety of digital devices, including e-book readers and computers. If you already have an account with Adobe Digital Editions and attempt to transfer previously purchased content to an e-book reader containing an "authorized to someone else" error, you won̵7;t be able to complete the transfer since the device is associated with a former owner. You must deauthorize the e-book reader first and then transfer content associated with your account.

    Deauthorizing

    • Deauthorizing your e-book reader requires connecting the device to your computer and selecting ̶0;Manage Library,̶1; or something similar, on the device. Open Adobe Digital Editions and click ̶0;Library̶1; view. The name of your e-book reader will appear on one of the bookshelves displaying within Adobe Digital Editions. Press and hold the ̶0;Ctrl̶1; and ̶0;Shift̶1; keys on your computer̵7;s keyboard and then press the ̶0;E̶1; key to bring up a list of e-book reader devices on your computer. If using a Mac, press and hold the ̶0;Cmd̶1; and ̶0;Shift̶1; keys and then the ̶0;E̶1; key. Click the name of your e-book reader ̵1; Kobo, Nook, Kindle or other -- and then click ̶0;Deauthorize̶1; to remove the previous owner̵7;s information.

    Authorizing

    • Leave your e-book reader connected to your computer and repeat the deauthorizing steps but click ̶0;Authorize̶1; to set the device up using your personal information. Follow the on-screen prompts and click ̶0;Finish̶1; when prompted to complete the authorizing process. After authorizing your e-book reader, the device is officially owned by you and contains your personal information. You can now search for, purchase and download as many e-books as you want. If you give your e-book reader to someone else, you must first deauthorize it to remove your personal information so the new owner can enter his.
