Things You'll Need
Instructions
Measure the outside diameter of the metal pipe with the tape measure. Make a note of the measurement such as 16 inches. Measure the wall thickness of the pipe. Make a note of this measurement such as 1/4 of an inch or 0.25.
Make a note of the quality factor for the metal pipe, such as 0.7 and the wall thickness coefficient, such as 0.4.
Make a note of the minimum tensile strength of the metal pipe, such as 50,000 PSI. Note the allowable stress for the pipe, such as 18,000 PSI.
Write out the equation used to calculate the psig or pounds per square inch (gauge) of the pipe. This equation is represented as ̶0;p(psig) = 2 x t(in) x S(psi) x E/(D(in) ̵1; 2 x t(in) x Y)̶1;
Input the variables into the equation in Step 4. The equation now looks like ̶0;p(psig) = 2 x 0.25 x 18,000 x 0.7/(16-2) x 0.25 x 0.4).̶1; Solve the equation and you will get a result of 4,500 psig using this example.
