Props
The props of the cat in a box magic trick make the magic happen. The props you will need for the trick include a cardboard box, a small table, a long tablecloth, a cat crate, a magic blanket and, of course, your magic wand. To set up the table, saw a hole in the location where you intend to place the box, which might be in the middle of the table. The table has a hole in it, and the tablecloth has a matching hole that fits over the table hole. The cardboard box has two open ends. One of the open ends has the flap attached at one side, but not the other three sides so that the flap can swing open or closed.
Setup
To prepare for the magic trick, place the cat crate under the hole in the table, set the tablecloth over the table and place the box with the end that has the flap over the table hole. The other open end of the box faces up. The opening of the cat crate must face the opening of the hole.
Performance
For the performance, start by showing the audience the cat. Tell the audience that you're going to put the cat into the box and make it disappear. This is a suitable time for a drum roll in the background. Place the cat gently into the box and place the magic blanket over the box. Your wand should be waving around the box as if you're casting a spell. Quickly remove the magic blanket, lift the box and show the empty box to the audience. Place the box back on top of the hole in the table, cover it back up with the magic blanket, wave your wand and remove the blanket to reveal the cat.
Behind the Scenes
When you place the cat into the box the first time, set it into its crate so that it can't escape or run off. The audience won't be able to tell that there's a hole in the bottom of the box if you hold the loose flap tightly with your hand as you lift the box to show the audience that it's empty. When you place the box back over the hole in the table, you can reach down slightly to grab the cat's scruff and--voila--pull it out the box.
