Homemade Bookcases

Adding bookcases to your rooms allows you to corral books as well as display framed photographs and decorative items. Bookcases in a child's room give you a place to store baskets of toys and books. A well-built bookcase from a furniture store is an expensive item, but making your own saves money and lets you create a bookcase that fits your exact specifications. Use an existing bookcase you like to give you an idea of what you want to build for your home.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the area where you will place the bookcase. This prevents you from making one that is too large to fit your space. Write down your measurements so that you can refer to them as you cut the wood.

    • 2

Choose the type of wood you want. Plywood works well and some home improvement stores carry plywood that is covered with a veneer that mimics cherry, oak or pine. If you want to stain your bookcase, maple is a good choice. If you plan to put a lot of items on your bookcase, choose thicker wood.

    • 3

Measure the wood. Using a tape measure, make pencil marks on the wood where you plan to cut it. Prepare a back, two sides, a top and however many shelves you want your bookcase to have.

    • 4

Cut the pieces of the bookcase. A handsaw works, but an electric saw will make a more precise cut.

    • 5

Assemble the pieces. Use nails or screws to attach the sides of the bookshelf to the back. Before attaching the shelves, measure the items that you will place on them to ensure you are leaving enough space. Secure the top to the sides and back and then place the shelves in and attach. Divide the height of the bookcase by the number of shelves you have, which allows you to place them the same distance apart. Brackets are another way to keep shelves in place and are good option for those that will contain a heavy load of books. Try to place the nails and screws where they won't be seen. Apply wood glue to corners, if desired, for extra hold.

Stain the bookcase. Follow the directions on the packaging for the stain you purchased. Allow the bookcase to dry completely before placing anything on it.
