American
An American-style saddle is a popular choice for horse riders. When using an American saddle, riders won't always wear the formal riding breeches. Trousers, jeans or chaps are more customary, and the pants will typically be more loose than breeches.
English
An English-style saddle is typically paired with the more formal riding breeches. The breeches worn with an English saddle are typically tight-fitting through the legs, thighs and seat of the pants. They are usually tucked into the top of the riding boots.
Color
The color of the breeches worn with an English saddle varies. Sometimes, the rider will choose a color to complement the horse he is riding. For example, gray breeches may be worn when riding a snowy horse, and white breeches may be worn when riding a dark horse to create contrast.
Material
Breeches can be made of several materials, such as twill or cotton. One material that is a typical addition is suede. Sometimes the suede will be just on the inside of the knees, to help grip the saddle. Some breeches will have longer strips of suede going up and down the inside of the pant leg.
