How to Hang a Guitar Horizontally

Serious collectors of guitars may wish to mount some of their guitars on walls. Such collectors can do this with or without a display case. Not using a case is a way to show the guitar off so that it hangs horizontally. It is possible to hang the guitar horizontally using only a few common household tools.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Locate a set of wall studs to use where the guitar mounting nails will be installed. Studs are reinforcement beams built into the wall. They can be located with either the use of a handheld stud finder or simply by tapping on the wall softly with a hammer. Areas with a stud will be firm and solid, whereas areas without a stud will echo slightly and will feel slightly hollow.

    • 2

Mark the areas on the wall where the studs are with a pencil. Two studs located side by side from each other are needed for hanging the guitar.

    • 3

Remove the metal plate on the back of the guitar with a Phillips screwdriver, if mounting an electric guitar. Hold the guitar to the wall where it will be mounted and hammer the bottom support nail in.

    • 4

Place the guitar on the wall where the first nail has been installed. If using an electric guitar, hang the body of the guitar from the edge of the recessed hole where the cover plate was. If mounting an acoustic, rest the bottom of the body so that it rests on top of the nail.

    • 5

Hammer the first nail used to support the neck of the guitar on the left-hand side. Position the guitar on the wall at the horizontal angle you wish to use.

    • 6

Hammer in the second support nail for the neck.

    • 7

Use the heat gun to melt small pieces of rubber heat shrink to the nails. This will keep the nails from scratching or harming the guitar.
