How to Make a Kabuki Drop

A Kabuki drop is a system that is designed for the theatrical release of a curtain for plays or other types of productions. These systems can be electrically operated or mechanical. You can make your own type Kabuki drop system by using quick-release clamps. To do this, you need to plan for the location of each clamp based on the type of curtain that needs to be dropped.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of curtain that will hang from the ceiling with the tape measure. Make a note of this measurement on a piece of paper. Divide the measurement of the curtain by 3 to calculate the number of quick-release clamps you will need. One clamp is needed for every 3 feet of curtain.

    • 2

Measure the length of the pipe, batten or truss where you will hang the curtain. Make a mark with a felt-tip marker every 3 feet.

    • 3

Attach the first quick-release clamp by positioning it on the pipe, batten or truss. Tighten the screw using a screwdriver to secure the clamp. Lock the clamp in place by using a safety cable or zip tie. Secure your remaining clamps to the pipe, batten or truss.

    • 4

Tie one end of the release cord onto the latch of the quick-release clamp. Repeat this step to attach your remaining release cords to the clamps. Run the release cords down to the floor.

    • 5

Attach your curtain to each of your clamps. Pull the release cords to test the quick release clamps. If all of the curtain falls uniformly to the floor, the test is successful.
