How to Do Bushing Tubes Inside of a Pipe

A bushing that is attached to the end of a pipe is used to reduce the size. This is typically done during a plumbing job for a water line. Pipes that require a bushing include a PVC pipe and metal or copper pipe in your home. To do this you need to know the size of bushing that fits on the end of your pipe. You then need to determine how to attach the bushing to the pipe.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • PVC primer
  • PVC cement
  • Tube adapter bushing
  • NPT reducer bushing
  • Adjustable wrench

Instructions

  1. PVC PIpe

    • 1

Use a tape measure to measure the diameter of the PVC pipe for the bushing. Write the measurement on a piece of paper. This is the size you will need for the bushing. Measure the diameter of your tube adapter bushing to make sure it will fit into the PVC pipe.

    • 2

Apply the PVC primer to the inside of the PVC pipe. Apply the PVC primer to the outside of your tube adapter bushing.

    • 3

Apply the PVC cement over the PVC primer on the inside of the PVC pipe. Apply PVC cement to the outside of the tube adapter bushing.

    • 4

Insert the bushing into the inside of the PVC pipe. Turn the bushing one-fourth of a turn to create the permanent bond.

    Metal Pipe

    • 5

Use a tape measure to measure the diameter of the metal pipe for the bushing. Write this measurement on a piece of paper. Measure the diameter of your bushing to make sure it will fit the metal pipe.

    • 6

Insert the male end of the NPT reducer bushing into the female end of the metal pipe. Turn the bushing clockwise by hand.

    • 7

Tighten the bushing onto the pipe by using an adjustable wrench. This will decrease the end of the pipe to allow a different sized pipe to be attached.
