How to Silkscreen Hidden Lettering on Lexan Panels

Lexan is a polycarbonate resin sheet that is manufactured by SABIC Innovative Plastics and is a type of amorphous engineering thermoplastic. You can silkscreen hidden letters onto a piece of Lexan using a glow-in-the-dark ink. This is done by camouflaging the letters so can they are only seen in the dark when no light is present. One type of application for this project is a sign or message board.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw the letters that you want to hide onto the Lexan on a piece of paper. Position the back of the paper on the silkscreen that is included in the kit. When looking at the front of the silkscreen frame, you will see the letters.

    • 2

Trace the letters onto the silkscreen by using the pencil. Remove the paper. Apply drawing liquid to all of the letters on the silkscreen with the brush. Set the silkscreen aside to dry.

    • 3

Pour the screen filler onto the top edge of the screen. Use the squeegee and spread the screen filler onto the screen. This will need to be done in one fluid motion. Set the silkscreen aside to dry for at least two hours or until the screen filler has hardened.

    • 4

Run the silk screen under cool water to wash off the drawing liquid. Set the silkscreen aside to dry, and then place the silkscreen on top of the Lexan. Secure the silkscreen to the Lexan with clamps.

    • 5

Weigh 2 ounces of white glow-in-the-dark powder on a digital scale. Add this powder to 4 fluid ounces of clear silkscreen ink and mix thoroughly. This is your glow-in-the-dark ink.

    • 6

Pour the glow-in-the-dark ink onto the bottom edge of the silkscreen. Spread it onto the silkscreen with the squeegee. Push the squeegee up and then pull it back down to spread your glow-in-the-dark ink evenly.

    • 7

Remove the silkscreen from the Lexan and allow the glow-in-the-dark ink to dry. Place the Lexan over a white poster board. Turn off the lights, and you will see hidden letters glow in the dark.
