Film
This model loads with 35 mm film for a 24 by 36 mm negative size. Removing the base plate gives access to drop-in film loading. The film̵7;s cut leader inserts into the spool. The film magazine and the spool slide down into the camera̵7;s chambers. The film winding knob at the top of the camera body advances the film. The frame counter displays a range from 0 to 39 at the base of the rewind knob. A knob rewinds the exposed film.
Shutter
The Canon II F is a focal plane shutter camera with cloth curtains. The shutter speeds adjust with a high shutter speed dial and a slow shutter speed dial. These rotating dials are positioned at the top and front of the camera body. Shutter speeds include Bulb, T, 1, ½, ¼, 1/8, 1/25, 1/40, 1/60, 1/100, 1/200 and 1/500 second. In 1955, this model updated the shutter design with a speed at 1/30 second.
Lens
The normal or standard lens for the II F is the Canon 50 mm f/1.8. The lens attaches to a universal thread mount. The lens screws on in a clockwise direction into the flange. The minimum aperture is f/16. The angle of view is 46 degrees. This lens contains six lens elements and weighs approximately 9.5 oz. This high-speed lens produces a flat image surface with minimal spherical aberrations. The lens barrel displays a black and metal exterior.
Viewing
Camera users peer through the range-view finder eyepiece. Two images of the same object appear through the viewfinder. The focusing lever knob adjusts with the left or right forefinger. When the two images coincide, the correct focus sets. The reversed Galilean viewfinder rotates to one of three magnifications to help fine-tune the focusing. The separate rangefinder window above the lens shows a more accurate angle of view recorded by the film.
Flash
The Canon II F accepts flash bulbs for flash photography. Although this model has flash synchronization, no ̶0;X̶1; symbol appears on the shutter speed dial. The FP-sync allows direct synchronization with a flash rail.
