How to Get Creases Out of a Picture

Creases can ruin an otherwise beautiful photo, preventing you from framing it or even seeing the full image. If you don't have a copy of the photo saved to your computer or digital camera, you'll need to remove the creases to produce a usable image. If the creases are very deep and have scratched some of the photo from the paper, don't try to physically remove the creases yourself. Instead, take the photo to a photo restoration specialist, who can fix the photo for you. But removing the creases digitally won't damage the print, and can product excellent results.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

Make a copy of the photo. Minor creases frequently won't show up in copies, but even if they do, having a copy ensures that if you inadvertently damage the photo while trying to remove the crease, you'll still have access to the image. Either scan the photo using a scanner, or copy it using a high resolution color copier.

Edit the crease out using photo editing software. Scan the photo into your computer, and open it in your image editing software. Then select only the area directly surrounding the crease, and use the blur filter to soften the edges -- blending it in with the rest of the image.

Use a sturdy cylindrical cardboard roll to gently work out creases in the actual photo, if you are unable to fix the image digitally. The tubes that posters come in are excellent for this purpose. Place the back of the photo on the cardboard, and slowly press the photo against the cardboard until it is wrapped partially around it. For extremely stubborn creases, try this procedure in the bathroom with a hot shower on. The steam can help loosen the creases.
