How to Sanitize Beer-Making Equipment With Bleach

Brewing beer at home can be an expensive hobby, with many bottled beers being available more economically. However, making your own beer is fun and satisfying. Part of making beer is cleaning up, and sanitizing your equipment is part of the process. There are several methods for sanitizing, including heating or using chemicals. Using bleach to sanitize beer equipment is cheap, easy and effective.

  • Household bleach, unscented
  • Large saucepan or bucket
  • Beer-making equipment
  • Boiling water

      Clean your beer-making equipment thoroughly after each use.

      Use unscented household bleach to sanitize the parts that come in contact with the wort, or the unfermented beer, after boiling.

      Mix 1 teaspoon of bleach with 1 gallon of water in a bucket or large saucepan.

      Soak your items that need sanitizing in the mixture for at least 20 minutes. Drain the bleach mixture and rinse your items with boiling water. The items that need sanitizing are the rubber stopper, yeast starter jar, airlock, thermometer, siphon, lid, funnel and the fermentor.
