How to Make Your Own Video Synthesizer

Manipulating a video image by altering its signal characteristics changes the way it looks. Make your own video synthesizer to change the appearance of your homemade video before it is displayed on a TV. An electronics store or hobby shop will supply the needed devices and video cables. No specialized experience in electrical engineering is needed.

Things You'll Need

  • DVD player
  • VCR
  • S-VHS cables, 6 feet each
  • Time base corrector
  • Video switcher
  • TV
  • TV remote
  • VCR remote
  • Homemade DVD disc
  • DVD remote
  • Blank VCR tape

Instructions

      Place the DVD player and the VCR side by side in front of the television set. Plug both power cords into outlets. Insert one end of a S-VHS cable into the S-VHS output on the back of the DVD player. If there is no such output, use the yellow-ringed video output instead.

      Insert the other end of the cable into the S-VHS input or yellow-ringed video input, depending on what type of cable is being used, that is on the front edge of the Video switcher.

      Insert an end of a S-VHS cable into one of the S-VHS outputs on the switcher. Insert the other end of the cable into the S-VHS input on the Time-base corrector. Insert an end of a S-VHS cable into one of the S-VHS outputs on the corrector. Insert the other end of the cable into the S-VHS input on the back of the VCR. Plug both the Time base corrector̵7;s power cord and the Video switcher̵7;s power cord into outlets.

      Set all controls on the Time base corrector and the Video switcher to ̶0;O.̶1; If a numeric scale is not being used, set all of the controls to the midway point on the scale associated with the controls.

      Insert one end of a S-VHS cable into the S-VHS output on the back of the Time base corrector. Insert the other end of the cable into a S-VHS input on the TV.

      Turn on the TV. Press ̶0;Menu̶1; on the remote control. Select ̶0;Video̶1; and then ̶0;Video input.̶1; Choose the S-VHS input from the list of choices presented. Press ̶0;Menu̶1; to exit the settings.

      Turn on the VCR. Press ̶0;Menu̶1; on the remote control. Select ̶0;Video̶1; and then ̶0;Video input.̶1; Choose ̶0;Line input̶1; or ̶0;S-VHS̶1; from the list of choices presented, depending on how the VCR is made. Press ̶0;Menu̶1; to exit the settings.

      Select ̶0;Video̶1; and then ̶0;Video output.̶1; Choose ̶0;Line output̶1; or ̶0;S-VHS̶1; from the list of choices presented, depending on how the VCR is made. Press ̶0;Menu̶1; to exit the settings.

      Turn on the DVD player, the VCR and Time base corrector and Video switcher. Insert a homemade DVD into the DVD player. Start the disc playing.

      Adjust the color settings on the Video switcher, labeled ̶0;R,̶1; ̶0;G̶1; and ̶0;B,̶1; to alter the appearance of the video being presented on the TV. Adjust the ̶0;Contrast̶1; setting to alter the detail of the image. Adjust the ̶0;Brightness,̶1; ̶0;Hue̶1; and ̶0;Color̶1; settings to radically alter the image.

      Insert a blank VHS tape into the VCR. Press ̶0;Record̶1; on the remote to capture the video synthesizing of the image that you have done. Stop recording when you are satisfied that enough video has been recorded.
