How to Replace NT8LP With NiMH

The NT8LP battery pack is used in a number of radio-control hobby transmitters produced by Futaba. An older design, the NT8LP uses eight connected nickel cadmium AA batteries to produce a 9.6 volt output with a capacity of 500 milliamp hours. For longer operating life between charges, you can replace the NT8LP battery pack in your Futaba controller with a nickle metal hydride battery. The newest NiMH batteries have up to five times the capacity of the NT8LP, and are easier to maintain and store.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the battery access cover on your specific model of transmitter. Battery covers are typically located on the back of Futaba controllers, near the device's charging port. Remove the access cover with a screwdriver.

    • 2

Pull the battery cable out of the battery compartment. Unplug the mini-connector on the end of the cable, then remove the NT8LP battery from the device.

    • 3

Verify that the replacement NiMH battery's form factor matches the NT8LP. The battery pack comprises four pairs of rechargeable, standard-size AA batteries, stacked side by side in two columns. Ensure also that the replacement pack is rated 9.6 volts. Higher voltage battery packs may damage the transmitter.

Plug the mini-connector on the NiMH battery pack into the transmitter. Insert the battery pack into the battery compartment, and coil the battery cable inside the compartment along the top of the batteries. Close and secure the battery access cover.
