How to Test the Antenna on a Home Mile 3 Tower

The location of an antenna on your roof is important to the reception of TV signals in your area. This is especially true if you plan to mount your antenna on a tower. Before you install an antenna tower to the side of your home, the reception of the TV signals in your area will need to be tested. You can do this by checking to see where on your roof the strongest signal can be received.

Things You'll Need

  • Small TV antenna
  • Metal pole
  • Duct tape

Instructions

    • 1

Attach a small TV antenna to the end of a metal pole that measures 4 to 6 feet. Secure the TV antenna to the metal pole using duct tape.

    • 2

Connect one end of a coaxial cable to the connector on the TV antenna. Twist the metal end that is on the end of the coaxial cable by hand until tight.

    • 3

Connect the other end of the coaxial cable to the ̶0;input̶1; connector of the field strength meter. If you do not have a field strength meter, use a small portable television.

    • 4

Position the front of the antenna toward the direction of the transmitter towers. Move to different areas of the roof where you can mount the tower.

    • 5

Rotate the angle of the antenna and read the display on the field strength meter. The area where you get the strongest signal is where the tower should be mounted.
