How to Splice a Line to a Cable Lanyard

Splicing rope is a way of attaching two pieces of rope together without tying a knot. You can also use a splice to create a loop, then attach a piece of rope to itself. There are several different ways to splice rope but they all involve unbraiding a piece of rope and working the individual strands into the new rope. Mountain climbers and boaters often prefer to splice rope because it creates less bulk than using a knot to tie two pieces of rope together.

Instructions

    • 1

Thread the eye hook end of the lanyard through the rope.

    • 2

Fold the rope to make a loop at one end. Keep the eye hook at the looped end of the rope. Do not cross the strands of the rope and leave 16 crowns, or loops of rope, on the bottom strand.

    • 3

Unravel the bottom part of the rope.

    • 4

Mark the three separate strands of rope with three different markers. Call them strands A, B and C.

    • 5

Hold strand A. Loosen a braid on the top piece of rope and pass strand A into the gap.

    • 6

Pull strand A through the gap.

    • 7

Repeat Steps 5 and 6 for strand B. Pass strand B over strand A and rotate the rope about 1/3 turn before passing strand B through the rope.

    • 8

Repeat Step 7 for strand C. Turn over the rope so that the three strands are on top and the unwound piece of rope is on the bottom.

    • 9

Continue Steps 5 through 8 until you have spliced all three strands completely into the rope. Pull the loosened rope tightly.
