How to Build a Plaster Box Corner

Artwork that is displayed in a home typically includes a frame that is hung on a wall. You can purchase a frame for the artwork or you can make your own. If you want the panel to be smooth with a white background, you can build a plaster box panel to hang on a wall. To do this, you need to obtain all the materials needed for the project from a local home improvement store.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure to the center of the plywood sheet with the tape measure and then make a cut mark using a pencil. Cut the plywood into two 4-by-4-foot pieces.

    • 2

Measure and cut one of the plywood strips into two 4-foot lengths. Repeat this step with the other three plywood strips.

    • 3

Cut a 45-degree angle onto one of the cut plywood strips using the miter saw. Repeat this step to cut the remaining plywood strips.

    • 4

Place four of the plywood strips on each side of one 4-foot by 4-foot piece of plywood. This will be the border for the box.

    • 5

Apply a bead of wood glue to the bottom of each plywood strip and lay each strip back in place. Secure each of the plywood strips with three 5/8-inch finish nails using the nail gun.

    • 6

Sand the inside and outside edges of the plywood strips using the hand-held sander. Round the edges of the plywood strips slightly. Remove the sanding dust with a brush or use a vacuum.

    • 7

Mix one part Gesso to four parts of joint compound in a small bucket. Apply 1/8 inch of the compound to the face of the box panel with the trowel. Smooth out the compound and then set the panel aside to dry.

    • 8

Sand the edges of the panel to remove any joint compound residue. Remove any sanding dust from the panel and then apply a second coat of compound to the panel. Allow the joint compound to dry.

    • 9

Apply two to three coats of Gesso to the surface of the plaster with a brush. Lightly sand the surface of the panel after each coat.

    • 10

Repeat this process to make another plaster box panel.
