How to Build Three-Point Hitch Bale Spears

Haul baled hay or straw with ease using a hitch-mounted set of bale spears. Bale spears like these are mounted to rear hitch of large trucks or tractors. The spears point in the opposite direction of the vehicle. Bales of straw or hay are then mounted onto the spears by the vehicle backing up into the hay. Bales of hay can also be lifted up and pushed onto the spears. The construction of bale spears are relatively basic and they can be put together by only making four sets of welds.

Instructions

    • 1

Position the 14-inch tube perpendicularly against the 42-inch tube so it is centered, 20 inches away from each end of the 42-inch tube. Weld the tubes together in this position. The 14-inch tube will be mounted to your tractor hitch and the 42-inch tube will hold your bale spears.

    • 2

Lay the 42-inch tube flat and position the three spear rods perpendicularly against the tube on the opposite side of the 14-inch tube. Space the tubes evenly at 19½ inches apart. Weld the spear rods to the 42-inch tube in this position.

    • 3

Insert 14-inch tube into the hitch on your tractor and position it where it will be when you are securing bails to it. Make an outline of the hole in the hitch on the 14-inch tube with your metal scribe. Remove the 14-inch tube from the hitch and drill a hole through the tube that is the same diameter as the hole that you outlined. Bolt the hitch bale spears to the hitch using your 6-inch bolt.
