How to Bore out the Trunion on an UZI

The Uzi is an open-bolt submachine gun that was designed in Israel by Maj. Uziel Gal in the late 1940s. The Uzi was eventually introduced to the Israeli Defense Forces in 1954 and became standard issue for troops two years later. Due to its functionality and accuracy, the Uzi was used by the U.S. Secret Service from the 1960s until the 1990s when it was phased out. The trunnion on the Uzi is where the barrel is mounted. If the shot seems off some on the Uzi, it may mean the trunnion needs to be bored out. Over time, grit and dirt can build up inside the trunnion and can negatively impact the accuracy of the gun.

Instructions

    • 1

Depress the clip release just beneath the trigger guard and remove the clip from the Uzi. Check to make sure there are no rounds in the chamber.

    • 2

Push in the barrel retaining nut catch and then unscrew the barrel retaining nut by turning it to the left. Pull out the barrel when the nut is completely loose. Set the barrel aside.

    • 3

Hold down the back end of the receiver cover and then push in the cover catch. Pull the receiver cover up and backward.

    • 4

Remove the bolt and cover assembly by pulling up and backward on both pieces. This will give you access to the trunnion.

    • 5

Plug in the rotary tool, such as a Dremel tool, and lightly hold it inside the trunnion. Work your way up and down the length of the trunnion several times and then turn the rotary tool off. Wipe the trunnion out with a clean rag.

    • 6

Sand the trunnion down with sandpaper and then clean the trunnion out with a small dab of gun oil on a rag.

    • 7

Reassemble the Uzi and test fire it at a firing range.
