Take the CD case apart by removing the black insert the holds the CD in place inside the case. You should only have the clear part of the case left.
Measure a long, rectangular space in the center of the back of the AM or AM/FM radio. Use that measurement to cut hook-and-loop fastener strips, such as Velcro, into two strips (four pieces total) of the same size.
Stick one piece of velcro on the inside of the left side of the CD case in the middle. Stick the other side of the strip on the back of the radio. Use the strips to join the back of the radio to the left side of the CD case
Attach another piece of hook-and-loop fastener to the middle of the back of the calculator. Put the last piece on the right side of the CD case. Stick the back of the calculator onto the strip on the right side of the CD case.
Set the radio to AM, and turn it on. Dial the radio to the highest number to the right on the AM band. Get as close as you can to a working AM station without actually tuning in -- hearing static is the goal.
Make sure the calculator is on. Begin to close the CD case slowly with the calculator and radio in it. Close the case until you begin to hear a buzzing tone.
Slowly open the CD case again until you can't hear the buzzing noise anymore. Test the homemade metal detector by holding it over a metal object, such as a key or coin. If it works, you will hear the loud buzzing noise again.
