DIY: How to Modify an Oxygen Concentrator Torch Holding Tank

A holding tank that is used with an oxygen concentrator is an inexpensive way to boost the output for a torch and concentrator. You can make a holding tank for an oxygen concentrator by modifying a simple air tank. This will provide you with a cheap alternative to purchasing a separate holding tank to use on an oxygen concentrator. To do this, you will need parts you can find at a local hardware store.

Things You'll Need

  • Valve replacement kit
  • Air tank -- 7 to 10 gallon
  • Teflon tape
  • 1 1/4-inch diameter hose end
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Hose clamps
  • Screwdriver

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the valve that is in the inflation stem of the air tank. Use the removal tool that is included in the valve replacement kit to remove this valve. The valve is the spring mechanism in the inflation stem.

    • 2

Turn the handle on the fill valve counterclockwise to open the fill valve. Tear off a few inches of Teflon tape, and wrap it around the threads on the 1 1/4-inch hose end. Wrap the Teflon tape clockwise and use two layers.

    • 3

Insert the thread end of the hose end into the opening in the inflation hose. This will be on the opposite side of the fill stem. Tighten the hose end by using the adjustable wrench.

    • 4

Place the end of the air line from your oxygen concentrator onto the inflation stem. Secure this hose by using the hose clamps. Tighten the hose clamps on the air line, using the screwdriver.

    • 5

Secure the air line for the torch of the oxygen concentrator onto the hose end, with a hose clamp. Power on the concentrator and allow it to fill the holding tank. This needs to be done before igniting the torch.
