How to Best Clean Fake Grass in a Fish Tank

Artificial plants for aquariums can be purchased in silk or plastic, and their look is so realistic that they rival live plants or even grass. There are quite a few benefits to using artificial plants in place of the real thing. For instance, they're easy to remove from the tank and clean. Additionally, they are not prone to diseases or parasites, use no oxygen, don't decay or get overgrown, and don't require light.

Things You'll Need

  • Medium-sized plastic container
  • Plastic bucket

Instructions

  1. Plastic Plants or Grass

    • 1

Remove the plants from the tank. Rinse them under hot, running water to remove any algae.

    • 2

Add 1 gallon of hot water to a plastic bucket, and mix with 1 teaspoon of household bleach.

    • 3

Soak the plants in the bleach mixture for about 1 hour. Stir the container periodically to loosen any algae or other gunk from the leaves. Rinse the plants very well under hot water, to thoroughly wash away the bleach.

    • 4

Place the plants in a different, clean plastic container, and cover them with hot water. Add chlorine neutralizer according to the directions on the box of your specific brand. Allow the plants to soak in the mixture for about 1 hour.

    • 5

Remove the plants and rinse well in hot water, until all odor and bleach residue are gone.
