How to Build a Recycled Solar Powered Flashlight

Create a solar-powered flashlight from a recycled plastic container. Using a solar-powered flashlight will save you money in the long run on purchasing batteries or replacing the flashlight when it breaks. Solar-powered flashlights are charged in the sun and can function for a few hours before having to be recharged.

Things You'll Need

  • Solar cell
  • Nicad/Nimh rechargeable battery
  • Terminal block
  • Resistor
  • IN4001 Diode
  • Double-sided tape
  • Switch
  • Wires
  • LEDs
  • Transparent plastic canister
  • Wire cutter
  • Drill
  • Pliers

Instructions

    • 1

Drill a 1/16-inch hole in the center of the removable plastic container lid.

    • 2

Thread the wires from the solar cell through the top of the hole and pull them through to the bottom. Apply double-sided tape around the border of the solar cell leading to the outside of the plastic lid.

    • 3

Drill two small holes in the plastic lid. Place your small switch on the outside of these two holes and thread the wires through the holes.

    • 4

Attach the horizontal terminal block to your batteries with tape. Then, attach the two vertical terminals to the horizontal terminal, placing one on either side and attaching with tape.

    • 5

Strip the coating from one of the vertical terminal wires with wire cutters, and connect the wire to the negative ("-") terminal on the battery. Strip the wire from the other vertical terminal, and wrap it around the positive ("+") wire on the switch and the positive terminal on the battery.

    • 6

Strip the wire located on the white bar of the IN4001 diode using your wire cutters. Wrap this wire around the negative terminal on the battery. Strip the wire from the other side of the diode, and connect it to a positive outlet located on the solar cell.

    • 7

Strip the wires on the LEDs, and wire them parallel to each other by connecting one side of the wires to the negative battery terminal and the other side of the wires to the positive terminal.

    • 8

Attach the plastic to the solar cells. Take your flashlight outside into direct sunlight to charge it.
